  • DBT sponsored National Symposium on "Frontier Areas in Plant Biotechnology" on 20th & 21st January 2006.

Lab facilities:
Two laboratories with well equipped facilities for UG & PG, two air-conditioned instrumentation rooms having sophisticated instruments such as Environmental shaker (orbital), Sonicator, Biological oxygen monitor, Leaf area meter, Laminar air flow systems and Bacteriological incubation chambers and separate culture room for algal and fungal cultures to facilitate students and faculty to carry out their individual and group projects.  Plant tissue culture facility established under DST-FIST.

Service Learning Programme:
The department offers two service learning programmes

• BOT 5202S - Enlightening the School Children to learn Botany
• BOT 5203S - Highlighting the concepts of Microbiology and Biotechnology to School Children

Objectives:

To enable the college students to

  • Interact with the economically and socially deprived school children
  • Share the skills, knowledge and laboratory facilities to understand the difficult concepts in Microbiology and Biotechnology
  • Demonstrate experiments related to Botany, Microbiology & Biotechnology for better understanding of concepts
  • Develop teaching skills and enjoy the art of teaching

Nutritive Corner:

  • Nutritive Corner is a smart kitchen of Botany Department and is established mainly to create awareness among the students about the nutritional foods, their calories and preparation
  • To know about the microbial spoilage of food
  • To provide fresh and delicious foods and juices
  • Sale of nutritive foods

ORCHID CLUB:
Objectives:

  • Promote academic interest in the minds of students
  • Identify their potentials and developing them through various competitions at departmental, interdepartmental and intercollegiate level
  • Develop leadership qualities and creative skills

Azeetha Banu of III B.Sc. Botany is selected to attend "Educational Exchange Program - Winter Term 2007" on the Environment in Oberlin in January 2007.

Parents Teachers Meet:
The department conducts Parents Teachers meeting every academic year to highlight the departmental activities to the parents and to keep them aware of their children's performance in academic criteria.  Nearly 90 parents attended the program during this academic year (2006-2007).

Future Plan:

  • To be recognized as a full fledged research centre
  • To offer certificate/diploma courses in mushroom cultivation, food preservation, bakery & confectionary and clinical laboratory techniques to students of the college and persons with +2 qualification
  • Research projects on plant tissue culture
  • Expansion of Microbial Culture Collection Unit and establishment of Biofertilizer Unit
  • To organize National / International Seminars/Conferences based on thrust areas
  • Training programmes for self help group women and youth on mushroom cultivation, organic farming and food preservation
  • Training programme on Biosafety and risk assessment for faculty and non-teaching faculty
  • Parent Teachers day on August 2007
  • Exhibition on "60 Medicinal Plants of LDC" & Sensitization of school children on future career as a Golden Jubilee program
