Futurology which is found
to be enjoyable and informative is
now offered to all PG students in the College
as an elective course in the even semester. 26
students from M.Com., M.Sc. Physics, M.Sc. Microbiology & M.A. have undergone this course. Special Functions is
offered as Self Learning course at PG level and
Number Theory at UG level. Combinatorics is offered as an elective course to PG students in all sciences.
Study on current trends in Graph theory, Chaos theroy Fractals, Fuzzy
topology are being envisaged by interested staff
and students and offered as elective courses, specially
designed courses and dealt as independent projects at
U.G. & P.G. levels.
A well equiped department library housing more than
2000 books and backdated volumes of journals offers conducive atmosphere for independent study that
triggers extraordinary perfomance of our students in
inter collegiate academic competitions.
Mathematics Club of the
Department meets thrice in a month in a variety of programmes
like guest lectures, quiz, dumb charades and
other mathematical entertainments. Problem corner is a
new feature augmented to the club activities.
Maths Carnival 2008 hosted
on 15th
Feb. 2008 for 108 students from 14 Colleges in
Tamil Nadu offering them a platform
to share their understanding, excitement and
celebration of Mathematical concepts through Paper presentation, Quiz,
Model Making conducted and adjudge by eminent professors
from the School of Mathematics, MKU
and other colleges. GVG Visalakshi College Udumalpet
won the coveted shield for overall performance. Teacher escorts had an informal interaction with the department staff.
Ms. S. Priyadharshini III
B.Sc. Mathematics had been selected as one among the nine in
Level I from Tamil Nadu and participated in the
Mathematical Training and Talent Search conducted by the
National Board for Higher Mathematics at Mumbai from May
15th to June 10th 2006. This year , Ms. B. Kavithakumari had been selected
to undergo MT & TS at Mumbai at O
level and underwent the course at Mumbai as the only participant from Madurai. This year 6 students have applied for the same.
Final year students had the opportunity of listening to Dr. Mrs. Nachiar, our Librarian, elaborating 'E-Library usage, writing project reports and Bibliography' in July 2007. In August 2007, Dr. Rajaram, HOD Department of Computer Science, TCE, on 'Number theory and network security' as essence of coding theory and Dr. V. Swaminathan, Director of Self financed courses, SN College, enlightened the final year students on "Recent trends in Graph Theory". In December 2007, Dr. Rajkumar Dare, Reader, Department of Mathematics, Madras Christian College, introduced the II year UG students to some applications of Formal Languages in Biology so that they are encouraged to choose such recent topics for their projects. Apart from this our alumnae who are now serving in other colleges interacted with our students sharing their research experience in Graph Theory and Abstract Algebra.
Our students had won the
overall shield in five
intercollegiate competitions Apex - Sermathai
Vasan
College, Yadava College for men, Thiagaraja Arts College, Madurai Sivakasi Nadar pioneer Meenakshi College and Yadhava College for women by being
placed as first in Quiz. Paper presentation, Dumbcharades and creating geometric representations.
In this year of Diamond Jubilee celebrations, our department staff were active in organizing and attending workshops on "Professional Competency", "Consultation on contemporary issues in Higher Education and Future Directions", and "Being an Effective Teacher" in the College. They have attended 5 national level Symposiums and presented papers on "Human Rights Education","Cross cultural service learning" and "Topology" at Chennai, Nagercoil and Hong Kong. Junior staff are being trained through UGC / RINA workshops in capacity building and ISO auditing.
Through service learning 11
students & 2 staff from the department spent 15
hours with 50 children in a near by corporation school in equipping them with short cut
methods in multiplication, formation of series, non verbal reasoning and enjoyment
of maths through tangrams and origami. 25 Students were
engaged in helping a NGO, SOCO Trust
in sorting and analyzing the data on violation
against women and children. 12 students in Astronomy enable school children to appreciate the wonders of the sky with star gazing at the college.
Students and
faculty of Mathematics department had a joyous and
meaningful time with Dr. Michael Henle, Department of
Mathematics & Computer Science, Oberlin College,
Ohio. He gave a series of lectures from 8.1.2007 to
20.1.2007.
